Makerere University is renowned across Africa and has been hailed as the “Harvard of Africa.” Its motto is “We Build for the Future.” The university has nurtured many national leaders, including former Ugandan President Milton Obote, former Tanzanian Presidents Julius Nyerere and Benjamin Mkapa, and former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki. Established in 2014, the Confucius Institute at Makerere University is a shining jewel in the university’s crown.

On August 20, Ambassador Wu Guangrong, accompanied by Minister Counsellor Fan Xuecheng and other embassy officials, visited the Makerere University campus and met with teachers and students at the Confucius Institute. Ambassador Wu spoke highly of the Institute’s educational achievements, thanked its teachers and volunteers for their hard work and dedication, and encouraged students to study diligently and put their learning into practice. He called on all involved to seize the opportunity presented by the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges and jointly create a brighter future for China-Uganda friendship and cooperation.

Mr. Tang Fei, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, briefed the delegation on the Institute’s operations and pledged to spare no effort in adding new and splendid chapters to China-Africa people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Dr. Gilbert Gumoshabe, Ugandan Director of the Institute, thanked China for its strong support for talent development in Uganda. He noted that Chinese language education in Uganda ranks among the best in Africa and expressed his commitment to passing the torch of China-Africa friendship from generation to generation.
